Green jobs are roles that contribute to environmental sustainability or climate solutions — across sectors like energy, finance, tech, and design.
I like the term ‘planet positive’ personally.
They’re not limited to scientists or engineers; most professionals can apply their existing skills to climate-aligned work.
-
“Probably” not. Many professionals overestimate the need for formal sustainability degrees or certificates and can waste months chasing them.
What matters most is showing your ability to empathetically describe the business problem you want to contribute to.
If in doubt, let the market tell you, before you spend the time and money
-
No. But ageism IS real. The trick is to avoid competing with people in their twenties.
Many mid-career professionals have the exact experience the climate sector lacks — leadership, operations, and scale-up expertise.
So don’t undersell yourself and aim for more junior roles. Less experienced juniors will do that work for less money.
The opportunity isn’t about age; it’s about relevance and readiness.
With a clear story and focused approach, professionals at every stage can pivot successfully into climate-aligned work.

Values are only a small part of the criteria you should be using to know what you’re looking for.
Strengths, values, identity, emotional drive and connection and the ‘shape of work’ are all part of establishing a criteria set you can use to narrow your focus. But they are only useful if you can test them, so each criteria needs to be a testable hypothesis - then you can run rapid tests to find your fit.
Many professionals find clarity by working through structured reflection, values exercises, or coaching / mentoring to design a career that matches their impact goals.
-
You cannot figure this out by figuring out. And doing it solo is soooooo slow you wil waste weeks and maybe months struggling with the messy middle., the imposter syndrome, the overwhelm, the lack of a critical friend sharpening your positioning and an insider giving you the advice you need to improve your visible credibility.
Although, of course, I would say that, I am a professional climate career coach, mentor and start up advisor.
The world is on fire and my work is to help smart capable talented people like you make your contribution to saving what we can.

Probably ones you don’t even know exist yet. (Sigh). So, clarity of the contribution you want to make, and how you will know you’ve found it, is a more important first step.
But to be sure there’s a huge range: project management, marketing, partnerships, finance, operations, and policy roles — all crucial to scaling climate impact. The climate sector needs communicators, analysts, and strategists as much as scientists or engineers.
Many of the best roles sit within emerging fields like circular economy, sustainable finance, or climate tech start-ups.

Most career changers don’t start from scratch — they translate what they already know. Skills in strategy, operations, marketing, finance, or data are all in high demand within climate-focused companies.
The fastest way to make the leap is by being clear on your criteria so you can find your niche as fast as possible, then establishing visible credibility for your transferable skills for climate challenges and networking (I prefer community building) inside purpose-led organisations.
